In “Dracula” we see that Dracula has been tasked with defending his brides from the outside world and has been able to do so. He has also been made to feed the woman, and has time and time again been seduced by the nymphs. They appear to use sexual advances to get him close. He is their husband and they are his angels. He is Charlie and they are his Angels! He worships these women and later is made to kill one for a reason which is honestly a bit confusing to me. Dracula is guilty of being too trusting of these women who see a man with a big mansion and a secluded, safe enough area they can call home. To be honest, I expect a woman to have a job but of course I also expect them to have children. Am I sexist? I guess. I can sleep at night, doesn’t bother me. I expect women to have a job outside of the house and for everyone to clean the house together, the children can pick of their own crap.

The Worst and the Best
Although the “Charge of the Light Brigade” was not necessarily bad, it did not seem to serve much of a point as we did not talk much about the people involved in the charge and their stories. I was just not that interesting to me. Although the poem was about men dying heroically for their country it just did not go far enough into the back story. “The Body Snatcher” was a very interesting story which made us question our moral character, and made us think as to why one would trade their conscience for money. Fetes was in a situation in which he was basically forced to do what he did, but he could have blown the whistle and got these people arrested before anyone else’s corpse had to be violated and before other people had to die and he could have kept his conscience intact. Later on his conscience kicks in and he feels completely guilty later becoming an alcoholic to cope with his bad deeds. Bad deeds come back to haunt us all and all we can do is suppress them with different activities. Not to be dark and gloom, but yeah…
Victorian Lust
Though the Victorians would initially be scare of things like the Internet they would eventually become very much into browsing for PORN as people do today. They would not have to spend their time at brothels, they would just satisfy themselves and call it a night… No more upsetting the misses and spending your time at the tee-tee bar, just quick. I know it is probably a bit sick the way I am explaining this but remember that to the Victorians masturbation and sex along with drugs and alcohol were a thing they enjoyed very much. They would definitely take abuse of all the things we have today. The Victorians are very much like us, we are just as bad as them with the exception of blackmail for sex, that has changed a bit.
Dracula: What I Expected
The story of Dracula is much more different then I thought. Dracula was much uglier then I thought he was, his hands were fury and he was much more of a beast. Dracula’s Brides were nymphs who took advantage of Dracula’s loneliness and attraction to them. Jonathan Harker was very interesting, he sold the land to Dracula. Jonathan Harker was not exactly what I expected because he was a bit naive and exploitable. Dracula was also surprising in that he I thought that Dracula was the one solely in charge of his actions but he was actually being encouraged by the harlot brides to do wrong. He felt he needed to feed those wretched women so he stole a child, he did not need to do so. He is of course still in charge of his actions but he was manipulated by the dependeponimuses (they are not lazy military wifes, but still. I am not saying all military wifes are lazy for the record, just a funny joke).
Vampires
The human fascination with vampires is easily answered if you ask my mom. She is my main source for all things involving vampires. She was so over the top into Twilight that it drove me crazy. I think the characters are made to be romantic because women usually love that. I think the immortality and extra strength would be the most appealing for men. I mean Dracula could have just been strong and probably most women would have stayed away. But, since he can just hypnotize them then he would be almost guaranteed success. I think that from Bram Stroker all the way to Twilight and everything in between like interview with a vampire and Angel. They keep a lot of the vampire rules the same. It probably makes it easy to follow for those huge vampire fans. I personally would not mind that extra strength so for me I guess that is what makes it appealing.
Reality: A Deadly Thing
Many people have done some crazy things to appear young as many do not want to cope with the worlds many things. People also want to appear as if they have done no sin and that they do not waste. Everyone also wants retribution in movies because it makes us feel as if that is possible in todays society. Retribution is just as hard as it was during the Victorian Era to achieve, nobody will allow you to have this. When people wish to get young the surgeries they get tend to be dangerous to their health and they will pay millions just to hide the ugly reality of aging. When people want to pretend that they have no sin they will pretend and pretend until they can no longer hide from reality. Reality is something none of us want to see, it is something that haunts us and is present in our nightmares. We all hate reality, but reality will catch you one day when you least expect it.
Invisible
To steal or not to steal? That is the question really. I think most people would want to start off with “I would rob a bank” . In truth, I would want to. Thousands of dollars would come in handy. But just because I can, doesn’t mean I should. I guess I would hope that my upbringing and morals would hold tight and I could bypass any theft. So if I am not going to prosper from my new ability I guess I better save some lives. I am thinking that just because I am invisible doesn’t mean I suddenly am able to climb a building or fly so superhero is out of the question. I guess I could go into a hostage situation and spook the criminals. I would defiantly mess with my brothers and the best part is, I would do it all in my boxers because why not.
The Psyche of “Jekyll & Hyde”
In “Jekyll & Hyde” there are two sides to the man: Jekyll (the actual guy) and Hyde (his dark side). I believe that the potion he drank to keep Hyde away was actually alcohol, and eventually he ran out of it and was unable to keep back his desire to harm people. When he drank he was able to keep others out of danger. Since his other side (dark side) was a murderer and he drinks to keep back this side is what makes it so very interesting along with the fact that our minds go directly to the idea that he has Multiple Personality Disorder, which he does not. In today’s society we are able for the most part to keep back and suppress some of our very sick desires which we are usually ashamed of, but some people slip. Many medicate these thoughts. Veterans hold back some traumatic memories, and they suppress them with alcohol so they may keep their sanity. Thankfully it has been made easier to cope with these things but back then people were too busy staying alive and unable to enjoy the many luxuries we use to escape reality when we feel like we have a burning desire to do wrong. You almost can’t blame Jekyll, but of course we want to see him get what he deserves.
Modesty in the Victorian Era
Today it is hard to go out and not see brief nudity or sexual references. The Victorian era was one of the most modest times that I have seen. Reading about how women couldn’t even swim in the ocean for their health without wearing crazy amounts of clothing or hiding behind a cabana is strange. My mother watches a lot of old shows. She watches “Pride and Predigest” at least once a week and you can see how the women in those shows are so covered up, wearing so many layers. I can only hope that England is not as hot as Georgia. I guess I do not understand why that was so important. Now I think that people could use a little bit of that modesty. Most defiantly not to the extreme but when you go to Walmart you should not have to see people body hanging out of their clothing.
Van Helsing
Van Helsing is my favorite monster movie. There are many reasons that I love that particular adaptation of the Dracula story. In the setting of 1887 Transylvania there is a vampire who hires Doctor Frankenstein to help him bring life to his unborn vampire children. In doing so he creates a undead “monster”. The monster hunter Van Helsing is sent to stop this from happening by any means necessary. There are many monsters in this story. There is of course Dracula, Igor his nasty assistant, Dr Frankenstein and werewolves. You almost cant blame the werewolves because they are not in control of their own behavior when they phase. However, the one that everyone calls monster is one of the best characters. he was delivered a terrible fate. he could have made his existence easier by just going with the flow but made a decision to not allow himself to be used and hid himself away. He was over joyed at the idea of having a friend and did everything in his power to help others and keep Dracula’s children from being born. I love that his character is one of the few real monsters in the movie.
